Abstract

This paper attempts to explore some proper nouns represented in the poetry of Baek-suk. The proper noun is meaningful in his poetry, because it shows detailed contents and methods of his poetry. A goal of using a proper noun is distinguished by two different things. One is a field report, that was revealed the reality of life. The other is a raising his consciousness, that is to say, a subject state of the Joseon and a internal disorder of modernization. Baek's try of using a proper noun in his poetry goes with the pace of the job of setting a pace. He has a stab at controling of the contrariety in his life. The function and effectiveness of a proper noun in Baek-suk's poetry shows of his understanding the realities of the Joseon's life. The proper nouns, in the concrete, ‘나타샤’, ‘천희’, ‘통영’ and ‘북관’ gave him the possibility of enlargement of experience and actualization of mutual understanding. When Baek has called a foreign poet during a period of being abroad, he expressed concretely his concern and likeness about the modern literature and he began thinking about the direction of the creative writing. The rules of disposition of naming points to traits that he understands the realities he actually faces. He has seeked for field reports and course of modern literature in the Joseon. Baek-suk tries to replace traditional factor with a new one. It is a study about the social and political history of the colonial period in the Joseon. He tends to take a new method of description in his poetry and tries to describe the past time and memory. As a result, he has got the unique poetry through the arrangement of old literal words and the composition of a regional dialect instead of the standard language. The modernity of Korean literature is located in this point. My main proposition is that Baek's proper nouns in his poetry are impossibility of translation. But this point paradoxically aims at modernization and raise up the level of colonial language of the Joseon. This approaching will help to report a new aspects of Baek's poetry.
