Abstract

The purposes of this study were to examine the publications of complete collections of Baek seok's poems with a focus on four of them published since the middle 2000s and analyze the current state and issues of lexical interpretations of his poetry based on the results. The major analysis results are as follows: Wonbon Collection of Baek seok's Poems annotated by Lee Sung-won and edited by Lee Ji-na and Jeongbon Collection of Baek seok's Poems edited by Go Hyeong-jin show different opinions about the publication of original poems and interpretations of poetic words but overcome the errors of the old complete collections of Baek seok's poems published so far to a great degree, thus achieving significant results. However, it is unfortunate that they contain only his poems published until 1948 and offer no information about his poems published in North Korea. In addition, there are many cases in which the two complete collections of his poems vary in terms of publication of original texts, which is attributed to the uncertainty of his original poems due to the poor editing styles and techniques of newspapers and magazines those days. It is thus required for researchers to consider the characteristics of his common verse composition, the units of meaning in his poetry, the development and flows of ideology, breathing, rhythms, and writing styles in general and obtain persuasive power with enough grounds in order to create the original copy based on the judgment of verse fragmentation and stanza composition in his original poems. In 2012, two complete collections of Baek seok's poems were published; they were Complete Collection of Baek seok Literature 1-Poetry edited by Lee Dong-sun, Kim Mun-ju, and Choi Dong-ho and Complete Collection of Baek seok's Poems edited by Song Jun. Both of them contain not only his poems published in North Korea but also his newly discovered works, being recognized for their efforts to include all of his poems. However, they do have a considerable amount of errors regarding the publication of the original poems and interpretations of poetic words. Thorough empirical reviews can help to correct their errors and thus lead to the full examination of all the aspects of his poetry and the confirmation of the original copy. The controversial issues with the researches on lexical interpretations in his poetry can be divided into four: first, researchers have different opinions from each other as there is no correct information on the meanings of poetic words due to the lack of grounds; second, different researchers present different interpretations in the context; third, some researchers interpret mechanically by resorting to the dictionary instead of making an active attempt to interpret according to the context, thus facing differences in opinions; and finally, there is disagreement due to simple transcription errors rather than differences in interpretation. If those errors are properly revised and supplemented, we will have a more profound understanding of Baek seok's poetry in all aspects.
