Abstract

This study compared the 2022 revised Korean language course in South Korea and the 2022 revised Chinese language course in China, focusing only on the elementary school reading content. The results are as follows. First, unlike the curriculum in South Korea, in the curriculum in China, reading content is not strictly categorized according to explicit and systematic core elements. Second, the curriculum in China makes it possible to check the hierarchy and quantification of reading content and achievement standards according to grade levels. Third, it can be confirmed that both South Korea and China have reading achievement standards that are unique to their own curriculum. This situation, in which certain achievement standards are unique to either of the curricula, is related to how the areas of content are set. That is, the curriculum in South Korea presents five content areas in the curriculum as following: ‘listening and speaking’, ‘reading’, ‘writing’, ‘grammar’, and ‘literature’. However, the one in China, in some cases, ‘grammar’ and ‘literature’ areas are not separated.
