This paper is about widely spreaded tenancy disputes in the first half of the 1920s in the period of Japanese occupation. And Kim clarifies this disputes was more progressive and aggressive form of struggle. Kim puts emphasis on tenants who lead disputes rather than ‘economic exploitation by landowners’ or ‘organizations and ideologies’ which was on the center of previous tenancy related studies. This paper describes specific conditions that made tenants unite and struggle. The three sensational disputes, Jinju-gun dispute(September in 1922), Suncheon-gun dispute(December in 1922), and Amtae island, Muan-gun dispute(December in 1923), claimed lowered tenant rental up to 40% not 50% the previous rental fee. As their demands for lower rental fee spreaded to the all over the country, it became the heart of the disputes in the first half of the 1920s. At the studies until now, farmers have been shown scapegoat of a structural and mundane exploit and extremely poor. And they have been regarded as passive ones who only reacted on the severe risk of right to live. Nevertheless the society became modernized and economically capitalized for reforming given circumstances, they actively struggled for lower tenant rental and finally obtained their goal.
