창군 초기 한국군 여단 편제의 성격에 관한 연구

A Study on the character of the structure of Brigades of the South Korean Army

초록

The purpose of this essay is to examine character of the structure of infantry brigades of the South Korean Army. After the Joint U.S.-U.S.S.R commission failed, United States decided to bring Korean question to the United Nations General Assembly and reinforce the Korean Constabulary(KC). The headquarter of the USAFIK(United States Army Forces In Korea) ordered by the US Department of the Army to make a plan for reorganization of the Korean Constabulary. General John R. Hodge, Commander of the USAFIK, suggested that reorganize the Korean Constabulary to regular army of six infantry divisions. But the JCS and the Department of the Army rejected that because they have a negative view toward creating a regular army in the south Korea. After original plan rejected, Hodge presented alternative plan. Hodge's plan envisioned the reinforcement of the Korean Constabulary with an authorized strength of 50,000 men and officers, and five infantry brigades each have three infantry regiments. SANACC approved this proposal for implementation in March 1948. After this, headquarter of the USAFIK and the Department of the Army were at tug-of-war over structure of infantry brigades of the Korean Constabulary. The Department of the Army had a skeptical opinion about the formation of infantry regiment's cannon companies. In spite of the negative opinion of the Army High Command, general hodge asked formation of cannon companies continuously. Eventually, the Department of the Army approved the plan to give 105mm Howitzers to the Korean Constabulary. Opinions of koreans can not be reflected during creation of the south korean armed force. Brigade structure of the south korean army were only result of political compromise between U.S. Department of the army and USAFIK.
