‘기억의 장소’ 또는 노스탤지어 서사

‘Sites of Memory’ or ‘Nostalgic’ Narrative

초록

This paper aims to demonstrate that Pierre Nora’s project ‘Sites of Memory’ is the nostalgic narrative, trying to reinforce the memories of French national identity. The nostalgic narrative ‘Sites of Memory’ could be understood as an expression of historical response or defensive mechanism to the unstable identity of contemporary France. The ‘Sites of Memory’ is not an positivist representation of past memory with no political interests, unlike Nora's statement. The nostalgic perspective, from which the ‘Sites of Memory’ seeks to resurrect the memories, is brought together by the notion of ‘Nation’. It is also likely to provide a limited view of the issues that are now being fiercely discussed in French society. The ‘Sites of Memory’ is a sort of ‘memory industry’ with an undeniable intention to promote French national unity and identity. In addition, it is doubtful whether the project ‘Sites of Memory’ will productively contribute to the discussion about French identity. As the project ‘Sites of Memory’ understands the identity of a community as static, such as an entity composed of past experiences, it does not allow the recognition of the formative character or the constructive process of identity. In other words, the project may lead to a closed perception of the French present and future society.

Abstract
