This paper analyzes the texts of Confucian classics cited in Yun Ch'iho's Diaries in order to examine the influences of Confucianism on Yun Ch'iho's (1865-1945) thought and his worldviews during the Japanese colonial era. Though Yun relied on Western models of civilization to propose a renewal of Korea's social systems and populace, it is unlikely that he completely renounced traditional Confucian thought. In fact, Yun’s attitudes toward Confucianism were diversified after the Japanese annexation of Korea: he praised Confucian sages, even placing Confucius's teachings on par with those of Jesus. Making frequent references to the Analects and the Mencius, Yun also criticized Japanese colonial policies. Moreover, Yun expressed his discontents with the violence of the time and his longings for world peace, citing Confucian classics in his diaries. Thus, I argue Confucian teachings were never disconnected from Yun's thought but remained as a framework to understand the world around him.
