Abstract

Without doubt, Yun Ch'i-ho (1864-1945) is one of the most well known and controversial figures in modern Korean history. His diaries, covering a huge span of his eventful life, give witness of the thoughts and feelings of a man who struggled between Confucianism and Christianity, Korean nationalism and Japanese collaboration. When Yun himself passed away during the morning of December 6, 1945, he had not only witnessed the end of the Korean Empire and the entire colonial period, but also had parted from three wives and many other family members and friends. In this age of huge transformations in Korea, Yun was also a firsthand witness to such prominent deaths and funerals as those of Queen Min and King Kojong and personally had to struggle with the Japanese meddling to reform Korean burial practices. Although Yun's views on death and burials can by no means be considered representative for the lot of Koreans during the colonial period, his concerns on death and burials will not only help to trace how death had an impact on his singular life and his changing attitudes. This paper also aims to provide insights into how a modern conception of death became a constant in an ever changing everyday.
