요청화행과 공손성 표현의 사용에 대한 텍스트 비교연구

Abstract

To use proper politeness in request speech acts is important especially when one speaks in foreign language. For the difference in the pragmatic rules between speaker's native language and target language can cause communication conflict. This paper aims to examine request expressions in Korean middle school English textbooks and see if learners are provided with proper situations(input) and proper requests (output) for each situation through the comparative study of texts. First, the paper examined English native speakers' requests from six movies and compared them with the requests in 12 Korean middle school textbooks. Next, the paper did data completion test to 20 English native speakers about the same request situations as given in the textbooks. The comparison between movies and textbooks shows that Korean textbooks do not provide learners with enough request situations with diverse social variables, which results in the lack of some requests. The comparison between textbooks and DCT shows that some requests in the textbooks are politer than necessary. The results indicate what social variables should be considered more in our textbooks and what types of requests should be taught and what alternatives should be offered for each situation.
