요청 부담에 따른 공손표현의 화용적 효과: 화자의 호감도 및 요청 수락 가능성에 미치는 영향

Abstract

Kwak, Jarang, Soyoung Kwon, Haejin Kim, and Donghoon Lee. 2018. “Pragmatic Effects of Polite Expressions according to the Degree of Request Imposition: Influence on the Favorability of the Speaker and Acceptability of the Request.” The Journal of Linguistic Science 87:1-28. The purpose of this study is to examine pragmatic effects of polite expressions for requests by experimental methods. First, the psychological parameters, such as the degree of imposition and the level of displeasure, for 187 request utterances have been surveyed in a preliminary study. The politeness of utterances has been manipulated by two Korean honorific verb endings, Hay-style (less polite) or Hayyo-style (polite). Second, the acceptability of the request and the change of favorability of the speaker as indices of pragmatic effect of polite expressions have been examined in the main experiment. Results show that the acceptability of the requests and favorability toward the speakers increases if the request is expressed politely using Hayyo-style. Interestingly, the effect of polite expression is bigger if the imposition of request is low. Current results demonstrate that the polite expressions with Korean honorifics is pragmatically effective for the request. (Pusan National University)
