시행의 언어적 강세와 소네트 율격 사이에 전통적으로 나타나는 제약을 제시하고, Frost와 Longfellow의 소네트에서 이 제약들이 어떻게 나타나는지 두 시인의 율격을 비교함으로써 알아보았다. 전통적 소네트 율격에서 엄격한 제한을 두는 어휘강세에 대해 Frost는 좀 더 완화된 제약을 갖고 있었고, 접어군의 강세정점이 약자리에 오는 것에 대해 이전의 시인들과 다른 제약을 보여준다. 또한 시행의 음절수에 있어서도 어느 정도 자유롭다. 이와 달리 같은 미국시인으로서 Frost보다 70년 정도 앞선 시대에 살았던 Longfellow는 전통적인 소네트 율격체계를 그대로 따르고 있다. 결국 Frost는 강세-음절율의 대표적인 형식인 소네트를 쓰면서도 전통적 율격체계에서 어느 정도 벗어나 자신만의 독특한 율격을 갖고 있다. 이것은 소네트에서 볼 수 있는 강자리에 무강세 음절이 오는 것과 같은 다소 인위적 리듬에서 벗어나, 무강세 음절수와는 관계없이 한 행에 일정한 수의 강세음절만을 갖는 ‘Strict Stress Meter’로 변해가는 과정이라 볼 수 있을 것이다. 영어가 강세중심으로 리듬을 형성하는 언어이므로, 시행도 무강세 음절에 관계없이 언어적 강세를 중심으로 리듬을 형성하는 것은 자연스러운 현상이라 할 수 있다.
Abstract
This study concerns the metrical constraints in the sonnets written by Frost and Longfellow. The sonnet is iambic pentameter, and the syllables on its line has one-to-one correspondence with its metrical position. However the metrical pattern does not always match the linguistic stress on the lines. Each poet has a different constraint in the mismatch between a metrical position and a linguistic stress. Frost's sonnets are compared with Longfellow's in this study. LSC(Frost) and CGPC are suggested for the peak mismatched with a weak metrical position in Frost's sonnets. However, the mismatched peak is not found except for Adjacency (phrasal stress) in Longfellow's sonnets. Therefore Longfellow's sonnet is closer to traditional sonnets than Frost's.
