초록
The purpose of this study is to compare linguistic features of meter in the sonnets of Spenser, Donne, Milton, Wordsworth, Keats, and Browning in the framework of Optimality Theory. They are the typical poets of Britain who wrote sonnets until the 19th century after Shakespeare. Sonnet consists of 14 lines, each of which is in iambic pentameter. One syllable corresponds to one metrical position, and the stressed syllable is mostly matched to a strong position according to W≤S. 6 poets have metrical constraints to restrict the various mismatches between metrical positions and stressed syllables. They also use syntactic constraints to restrict the word movement for rhyming at the end of a line or avoiding the violation of metrical constraints. This study suggests their metrical and syntactic constraints, and their hierarchy.
