초록

It has been widely recognized that spoken language is important for grammaticalization studies, but the specific features of spoken language in this context have not been extensively discussed. This paper describes the differential features of spoken and written languages in the context of grammaticalization studies, in four major domains of physical media, performance scene, structures, and organizations. This paper shows that the performance speed and on-line pressure for production, perceptual salience, and visibility of the addressee play major roles in grammaticalization. Furthermore, it shows that spoken language richly contains markers of dysfluency such as hesitations, repetition and pauses, from which discourse organizing materials such as discourse markers emerge in language. In addition, it illustrates that narrow lexical variation in speech contributes to frequent use of certain, semantically-general, words and constructions which consequently become increasingly exposed to semantic negotiation in discourse, a process that often leads to grammaticalization.
