The purpose of this paper is to examine the usages of honorific ending ‘-si-' which is used for the hearer or the situation subject, and to analyze the backgrounds of diffusion. In chapter 2, we review the usages and new functions of ‘-si-' with specific examples. In chapter 3, we investigate the backgrounds of spread of ‘-si-' as an honorific ending for the hearer or situation subject in terms of the honorific use strategy and sentence structure. Through this process of observation, it's confirmed that the ‘-si-' is used to respect the extended condition subject of predicate and the situation subject of conversation context. The situation subject appears as the independent constituent of sentences or it doesn't appear on the surface of sentences, because it's free from the sentence structure. The ‘-si-' acts as a close link between the speaker and the hearer or the speaker and the situation subject. Korean speakers use ‘-si-' at every predicate to respect the hearer of one's face. Especially, in the context of commercial conversation, they strategically use ‘-si-' as many as possible to treat customers with the utmost courtesy. The attitude of Korean speakers about these usages of the ‘-si-' is negative. From the viewpoint of the sentence structure, the overuse of ‘-si-' is a reaction to complement the essential absence of it. In some sentences those subject are inanimate. Furthermore, the overuse of ‘-si-' arises in the process of efforts to maintain speech level as ‘haseyo', which has ‘-si-', in the all sentence moods.
