Abstract

This paper develops a theoretical model to describe and explain distinctive variation in strategy and performance of international joint venture (IJV) among transition countries from institution-based view. Our model draws four key dimensions of IJV in China, identifying idiosyncratic structural and social factors shaping cross-national diversity of IJV performance in transitional economies. These are conflicting objectives between partners, 2) issues related to management and stability, 3) key factors affecting successful performance of IJV, 4) the role of institutional configuration including the trust and social identity. The paper conceptualized a joint venture as the effective organizational arrangement for the transfer not only of organizationally embedded firm specific knowledge, but also of institutionally-embedded country-specific knowledge which may not be achieved through market transaction. The model developed in this paper has strong implications for explaining recent unresolved problems and significant managerial dissatisfaction in operation and performance, but also for developing contextual and long term based strategy in international joint venture.
