본 논문에서는 전략적 제휴나 합작투자와 같은 조직간 협력 네트워크에서 파트너 기업들 사이의 신뢰가 다양한 관련 변수들과 가지는 구조적 관계를 정확하게 설명할 수 있는 통합적 모형을 찾아내기 위해 신뢰를 조절변수로 보는 관점과 매개변수로 보는 관점 등 두 가지 대안적 연구모형을 실증적으로 비교 분석하였다. 다른 나라 기업들 사이의 282개 국제합작투자에 대한 설문조사를 통해 수집된 자료를 사용하여 이 두 가지 모형의 실증적 설명력을 비교 분석한 결과, 신뢰는 전략적 합의, 조직적합성, 커뮤니케이션의 등 세 가지 독립변수의 영향을 중간에서 매개하여 조직간 협력 네트워크의 성과변수인 경제적 이익과 파트너간 학습에 궁극적으로 연결시켜주는 핵심 매개변수라는 것이 밝혀졌다. 이에 반해 신뢰를 이들 독립변수들이 종속변수들에 영향을 미치는 방식을 조절하는 변수로 보는 관점은 실증분석 결과 지지되지 않았다.
Abstract
This study empirically compares two alternative research models concerning the structural relationships between trust and surrounding variables in interorganizational cooperation networks, such as strategic alliances and joint ventures. The first models posits trust as a moderator that intervenes in the way in which independent variables affect dependent variables, while the second model presumes trust as a mediator that relays the effects of independent variables to dependent variables. Using an original data set on 282 international joint ventures, we compared the relative explanatory power of the two alternative research models. The results of the empirical analysis supported the model that presumed trust as a mediator. According to the findings of the study, inter-partner trust in international joint ventures plays a role of crucial mediator that relays the effects of three independent variables, such as strategic agreement, organizational fit, and communication, to dependent variables, such as economic returns and inter-partner learning. On the hand, the model that considered trust as a moderator was largely not supported in the empirical analysis.
