Abstract

The aim of this paper is to propose that tough-movement in English tough+to- infinitive construction should be analyzed as the syntactic operation of explicit argument movement rather than that of null wh-movement. Viewing from the panchronic perspective, the proposal as such is based on the fact that the matrix predicate of tough+to-infinitive construction retains syntactic-semantic property of unaccusative adjective from Old English to Present-day English. The syntactic-semantic motive of the tough-movement in the tough+to- infinitive construction is triggered by a thematic feature in T (or C). It is generally agreed that tough-movement was strictly constrained by the object of accusative transitive to-infinitive in Old English, but it was extended to the object of preposition as well as that of dative transitive to-infinitive, and consequently preposition stranding came to be possible around after 1400, which gave a room for null wh-movement. Given the theory of Minimalist Program, however, the structural Case of the object in the tough+to-infinitive construction is determined as the reflection of the syntactic operation of the Agree of thematic feature as soon as the object is internally merged onto the subject position of unaccusative predicate in the manner of phase by phase. It means that the internal merge of the object in the tough+to-infinitive construction should satisfy the bare output condition in accordance with the Burzio's generalization not by means of null wh-movement, but by means of explicit argument movement.
