본 논문에서는 UG 이론 구성과 유형론적 증거의 관련성을 논의했다. 원리와 매개변항 모델은 양방향 함축을 설명하기에 적절한데, 관찰되는 통언어적 일반화는 대개 일방향 함축이므로, 엄격한 원리와 가변적 매개변항으로 구성된 UG 모델에서는 이러한 현상을 설명할 수 없다는 사실을 보았다. 또한 Chomsky는 UG의 원리에 예외가 없다고 하지만, 관찰된 많은 통언어적 일반화는 예외가 있으므로, 유형론적 증거는 UG에 관한 가설 설정에 사용될 수 없다고 할 수 있다. 언어 유형론에 대한 지식은 생득적이지도 않고 언어습득 과정에서 학습되지도 않으며, 어떤 의미에서도 어린이가 습득하는 문법의 일부가 될 수 없다. 이러한 결론이 정확하다면, 유형론적 증거는 UG의 구성에 관련이 없고, 어린이가 유형론적 일반화에 관한 지식을 갖고 있을 가능성이 적으므로 유형론적 증거는 언어지식이 아니며, 유형론적 연구는 UG의 개념 없이도 할 수 있다. 몇몇 가장 잘 확립된 유형론적 일반화는 언어사용에 근거한 설명이므로 이들을 UG 이론 내에 포함하려고 하는 것은 잘못이며, 어휘 매개변항화 가설과 미세매개변항이 이러한 결론을 지지하고 있다.
Abstract
This paper reviews two approaches to universals, Universal Grammar (UG) and language typology. It is argued that the generative program of building cross-linguistic generalizations into UG cannot succeed because the observed generalizations are typically one-way implications and because they have exceptions. The paper then discusses whether language typology can contribute to our knowledge of UG, and concludes that most typological generalizations are not knowledge of language and typological evidence is essentially irrelevant for the construction of UG.
