Many syntactic inversions are found in sonnets' lines. This paper shows that these inversions occur for rhyme, metrics and rhythm. Furthermore, it argues that the syntactic inversions are explained by the constraint interactions. So this paper suggests the constraints such as RHYME, syntactic constraints, metrical constraints and rhythmic constraints, and it maintains that syntactic inversions occur in order to satisfy them. RHYME and a syntactic constraint outrank metrical constraints, while the metrical constraints dominate the rhythmic constraints.
Abstract
Many syntactic inversions are found in sonnets' lines. This paper shows that these inversions occur for rhyme, metrics and rhythm. Furthermore, it argues that the syntactic inversions are explained by the constraint interactions. So this paper suggests the constraints such as RHYME, syntactic constraints, metrical constraints and rhythmic constraints, and it maintains that syntactic inversions occur in order to satisfy them. RHYME and a syntactic constraint outrank metrical constraints, while the metrical constraints dominate the rhythmic constraints.
