초록
Word frequency effect in speech production refers to the finding that high frequency items are processed faster than low frequency items. The current study investigated the extent to which word frequency influences Korean homophone access using picture-naming tasks. Specifically, following Han(2007), the current study examined the time it takes to name a picture that corresponds to the more frequently- occurring meaning of a homophone compared to the time it takes to name a picture that corresponds to the less-frequently occurring meaning of the same homophone. For this, first, the current study carried out tests of subjective frequency ratings to determine how well the subjective frequency counts would fit with the objective frequency counts gathered from existing written corpora. In the main picture-naming experiments, it was found that, consistent with previous reports, high frequency items were in general named faster than low frequency items. However, it was also found that the frequency effect was greater for homophones than for the frequency-matched control non-homophone items. Implications of the current results are discussed in the context of word frequency effect on Korean homophone representation as well as of speech production models.
