This study investigates the influence of native language (L1) on the acquisition of case alternation in Korean ditransitive locative verb constructions among Japanese and English-speaking learners, divided by proficiency level. The findings of the study were that both intermediate and advanced Japanese and English learners recognized sentences with typical case markers similarly to native Korean speakers, irrespective of proficiency level. This trend was also noted in constructions involving quantifiers. However, only the advanced Japanese learner group matched native speakers in recognizing sentences with locative alternation and non-typical case markers. The findings suggest that the native language plays a role in how second language learners recognize sentence structures in Korean. Learners had difficulties interpreting sentence meanings when the quantifier modified the case marker ‘-ul/-lul,’ a challenge that persisted across all groups regardless of proficiency.
