This paper aims to figure out how public sentiment is conceptualized in newspaper articles during a campaign period by analyzing figurative expressions from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. To achieve the goal, this study examines and selects newspaper articles available on the internet portal within a certain period of time, extracts figurative expressions describing the public sentiment, and analyzes them in terms of conceptual metaphor theory. In this way, this study reveals that newspaper articles usually conceptualize the abstract public sentiment as two main concrete types: objects and people. More specifically, they are ‘text', ‘colors', ‘bombs', ‘wind', ‘water', ‘a place', ‘the angry', ‘renegades', ‘discipliners', ‘the powerful', and ‘judges.' Through such conceptualization, the characteristics of public sentiment can be easily understood.
