Abstract

This paper examines Richard Powers' novel The Overstory, analyzing the formation and contestation of an emergent “ecological class” in response to the contemporary climate crisis. Employing a new materialist framework, this study decenters anthropocentric paradigms to foreground non-human agency within ecological assemblages. The analysis focuses on female protagonists—notably Olivia and Patricia—who function as liminal figures positioned between human and non-human ontologies. These characters serve as conduits for nature's voice, transmuting private affective encounters into collective ecological praxis. The ecological class constitutes a trans-species coalition that privileges processes of becoming and circulation over the imperatives of capitalist development and growth, thereby asserting habitation rights for all terrestrial life. Ultimately, this analysis demonstrates how Powers' narrative challenges the logocentric framework underpinning contemporary society through these ecological struggles. The study argues that the novel gestures toward the epistemological and ontological transformations required for navigating the exigencies of the climate crisis.
