초록
본 논문은 캐런 헤스(Karen Hesse)의 『모래 폭풍을 벗어나며(Out of the Dust)』를 정동이론, 특히 앤 츠베트코비치(Ann Cvetkovich)가 말한 ‘공적 감정으로서의 우울’(depression as a public feeling) 개념을 바탕으로 분석한다.
Abstract
This paper examines Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse through the lens of affect theory, particularly drawing on Ann Cvetkovich’s notion of depression as a “public feeling.” It argues that the novel functions as an archive of unspoken affect, capturing how language fails under the weight of historical trauma, and how literature preserves and communicates these emotional residues through form. The choice of a verse novel—its fragmentation, silences, pauses, and rhythms—enables Hesse to embody the affective experience of grief and emotional paralysis without relying on linear narrative closure. Billie Jo’s internalized sorrow, born of familial loss and environmental catastrophe, is not articulated through catharsis but sedimented in the poetic form, reflecting a politics of feeling rooted in silence, repetition, and sensory imagery. Ultimately, Out of the Dust becomes an affective narrative that explores how literature visualizes and preserves trauma on a pre-linguistic level when language is exhausted and only silence remains. Billie Jo’s “unspoken affect” accumulates in the diary-like verse, where mourning unfolds not through the binary of rupture and healing, but through residual traces of emotion lingering between speech and silence.
