Abstract

Richard Powers’s The Overstory demonstrates that effectively responding to anthropogenic environmental crises requires considering new ways of seeing. By highlighting the effects of anthropocentric thoughts and beliefs as well as the fundamental limitations of human sight, the novel underscores the fact that we are not seeing as much as we could. While it identifies various symptoms of the Anthropocene (such as global warming, unprecedented rhythmic changes in ecologies, indiscriminate resource exploitation, and extensive deforestation), it poses a core question: “What keeps us from seeing the obvious?” This persistently pursued question suggests that without delving into our ways of perceiving the world and the associated challenges, we have a slim chance of recognizing the various symptoms of the Anthropocene, let alone of alleviating them. Although it is evident that the issue of restricted human vision is central to the novel, this theme has received little critical attention. The novel has primarily been studied in terms of its narrative structure and techniques, plant agency, and the acknowledgment of plant agency and its political implications. This critical response trend may be attributed to the long-standing awareness of human vision’s limitations. Edgar Allan Poe’s The Purloined Letter demonstrated this around two centuries ago. Given our current Anthropocene era, however, it is crucial to thoroughly investigate the novel’s exploration of human visual perception and its various aspects. Understanding how humans perceive the world directly impacts the survival of all humans and nonhumans (biotic and nonbiotic). This paper explores Powers’s novel in order to examine how we see and comprehend the world. In the process, I show how the novel suggests ways to expand the horizon of our vision at both human and artificial intelligence levels.
