Background: Surgery for bromhidrosis has a high risk ofcomplications such as hematoma and necrosis. Newnonsurgical methods may reduce the burden on surgery andthe risks for the patient. Objective: This study was performedto evaluate the efficacy and side-effects of the 1,444 nmNd:YAG interstitial laser for treating axillary bromhidrosis. Methods: Eighteen bromhidrosis patients were treated witha 1,444 nm Nd:YAG laser at Korea University AnsanHospital. The post-treatment follow-up was 6 months. Afterthe procedure, we confirmed apocrine gland destructionthrough histopathological examination. At each follow-up,we measured the severity of the remaining odor, postoperativepain, degree of mobility restriction, and overallsatisfaction. Results: After 180 days of follow-up, malodorelimination was good in 20 axillae, fair in 12 axillae, andpoor in four axillae. At the end point of the study, 14 patientswere totally satisfied with the laser treatment, three patientswere partially satisfied, and one patient was disatisfied. Painand limitation of mobility were significantly reduced within1 week post-operatively, and were almost resolved within 4weeks post-operatively. A histopathological examinationrevealed decreased density and significant alterations to theapocrine glands. Conclusion: Subdermal coagulation treatmentwith a 1,444 nm Nd:YAG interstitial laser may be a lessinvasive and effective therapy for axillary bromhidrosis.
