본 글은 도덕공동체의 확장에 따른 인간 이외의 자연적 존재들에 대한 인간의 도덕적 의무에 대해 논의한 것이다. 필자는 도덕공동체에 대한 인간중심주의적 접근방식과 인간 이외의 자연적 존재들을 둘러싼 도덕적 의무에 관한 세 가지 논변을 검토한다. 이러한 검토를 통해 도덕적 의무 없음의 논변은 이성적인 인간만을 도덕적 의무의 대상으로 간주하며, 간접적인 도덕적 의무의 논변은 인간성에 대한 의무를 다하기 위해 자연적 존재들에 대해 도덕적 의무를 가질 것을 주장하고 있음이 드러난다. 그리고 직접적 의무의 논변은 크게 개체론적 접근방식과 전체론적 접근방식으로 나뉘는데, 개체론적 접근방식은 감각능력, 권리, 생명체의 선에 입각하여 자연적 개체들이 도덕적 의무의 대상임을 주장하며, 전체론적 접근방식은 생명공동체의 통합성, 안정성, 아름다움의 보전이라는 대원칙에 입각하여 전체로서의 자연에 대한 도덕적 의무를 역설하고 있다. 필자는 ‘부분적으로 전체론적인’ 접근방식이 도덕공동체의 확장에 따른 자연적 존재들에 대한 인간의 도덕적 의무에 대하여 보다 타당한 논변이 될 수 있음을 밝히고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper explores our moral obligations toward natural entities by the extension of moral community. I studied briefly both an anthropocentric approach about moral community and the three arguments of moral obligations to nonhuman beings. As a result, It is discovered that no obligation arguments hold moral obligations only toward rational human beings and never toward nonhuman organisms, an indirect approach argue indirect moral obligations toward animals for humanity. And direct moral obligation approach is divided into individualistic approach and holistic approach. Individualistic approaches based on sentience, rights, and a good of life regard individual natural entities as moral status. And holistic approaches based on principle to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of biocommunity argue moral obligations toward natural world as whole. Finally I conclude that a partly holistic approach may argue validly our moral obligations to nonhuman beings by the extension of moral community.
