Abstract
On the basic Humean assumption that voluntary human actions are explained by belief-desire pairs, it is unnatural and suspicious to put Spirit as an independent part alongside with Reason and Appetite. But on the alternative assumption that human actions are explained fundamentally by belief of goodness alone, Reason, Spirit, and Appetite can be distinguished from each other quite nicely in accordance with the nature of their respective belief of goodness. Socrates' argument for the division of the soul into three parts in Republic Ⅳ can be fully appreciated only with the assumption that Plato subscribes to this non-Humean model of human action. If so, for Plato, desires of Reason, Spirit, and Appetite are epiphenomenal to their respective beliefs of goodness, and every desire aims at what the corresponding part of the soul considers to be good. A careful reading of Socrates' argument in Republic Ⅳ will show that two widely shared views concerning this argument are both mistaken; the popular interpretation that Plato acknowledges good-independent desires in the Republic is not supported by the text, and the argument for the tripartite soul in Republic Ⅳ is surprisingly straightforward.
