Abstract

Much ink has been spilled over the Phaedo in order to support that this dialogue propounds a view that the philosopher has to behaviourally avoid bodily pleasures as much as he can (“Behavioural Interpretation”). Surprisingly, however, none has been seriously analysed the Exchange Argument (69a-c), which is considered by several scholars to be evidence that this dialogue considers it enough for the philosopher merely to avoid bodily pleasures attitudinally (“Evaluative Interpretation”). Against this backdrop, to defend the former interpretation, I maintain in this paper that this argument only makes sense when we read it from the perspective of this interpretation. To be more specific, I maintain that the basic arrangement of a correct exchange is not between bodily passions, but between bodily passion and wisdom. More precisely, I argue that bodily passion is essentially being paid out in the process of a correct exchange. However, the philosopher is sometimes required to purposively engage in an activity that results in bodily pleasure for the sake of living a philosophical life. Thus, I contend that the philosopher is revealed to actively move away from bodily pleasures, to the greatest possible extent in the process of a correct exchange. My argument is supported by (a) Socrates’s use of ‘anti’ and (b) his comment on the effect that an exchange for virtue can be deemed correct only if the agent pays off either bodily passion or wisdom with a view to maximizing wisdom and then attaining genuine virtue, regardless of which of the two (bodily passion or wisdom) he chooses to give up.
