Abstract
In the Metaphysics A.1-2 Aristotle specifies the causes and the principles of which sophia is the science. So the final definition of sophia follows that it is a science that investigates the first principles and causes. But at the A.3 Aristotle restates the definition of sophia as the science of "the original causes". The question then is what he means by the word "causes" in this connection. In this chapter the word "principles" disappeared. We may ask whether the universals are still considered the object of sophia by being implied in "causes" as they were implied in "principles" in the two previous chapters, and whether dealing with "the most universals" is still recognized as a characteristic of sophia complementary to its other characteristic, the dealing with causes. Since both principles and causes have the same denotation, it is not impossible that this abbreviated expression indicates no change of thought and that universals are understood in the expression original causes. But this explanation presents further difficulties. The limitation of causes in this case rather has to be explained by another exposition.
