Abstract
Death is an inevitable matter of human beings regarding which they have no choice. Many people usually close their lives under the care of doctors and nurses at death’s door. Although medical workers actually do their best in order to cure their patients, it is only associated with medical treatments away from the mental sphere. As Z. Buaman points out, it seems that we live our lives seriously considering how we should live but do not agonize over or think of the matter of death as much as the matter of life. While death is obviously another aspect of life, we seem to put death aside beyond life or not to try to face the fact of death. Bauman expresses it as dismantling of death and trivialization of death. As mentioned above, we have been given treatments for our bodies at the medical dimension but have not cared about the matter of death at the social and cultural dimension. Death of human beings is not only related to the body. Herein lies the oughtness or necessity, as co-authors think, that philosophy associated with the mental sphere of human beings must explore the matter of death. Death of human beings is one of main themes of existentialism. co-authors analyze the matter of death by means of the idea of Grenzsituation[limit situation] of Karl Jaspers. Jaspers emphasizes a situation of a human being and regards a human being as a being within a situation. Jaspers defines an ultimate and crucial situation as Grenzsituation, which refers to death, suffering, sin, struggles and the others. Jaspers recognizes Grenzsituation as “a wall which we cannot escape from and which we despair by running into.” Being faced with death, we try to escape from or avoid death by way of oblivion, self-deception, concealment and the others, according to Jaspers. He states that human beings can overcome a death as Grenzsituation and its anxiety only when they have critical courage on the unstable base. Jaspers indicates that human anxiety derives from the situation where human beings cannot find out their own realities and the original nature of existence. Co-authors insist that nursing science and philosophy should balance over the matter of human death between the physical aspect and the mental aspect. Co-authors propose that nurses should have a program to help patients relieve their anxiety of death while having conversation and philosophical consultation with them based on the existential philosophy. Co-authors suggest that we should develop the program by dint of the integrated research of nursing science and existential philosophy.
