Abstract
According to the present-day physicalism, light is a compound of electro-magnetic waves, some of which are almost entirely responsible for our color perception. What remains of our color perception are just our eyes, as merely passive light receptors, and our brain behind them as equally passive machine of some sort. The reason why light do 99 % of the job is because the apparently white sunlight is in fact decomposed into colored lights. But Goethe tells a different story. The so-called decomposition, contrary to the common wisdom, is not an established scientific fact but at best a hypothesis. To be more exact, there is no single observation that justifies that hypothesis. As a result, it is not even a hypothesis at all. Goethe also tells us what is really there in place of the fictitious “decomposition.” The conclusion is then that the present-day physicalism cannot be the right word for naturalism. Naturalism in general is a conviction that everything is a phenomenon in nature. The question is as what we should construe “nature” so that naturalism in general comes out true. Physicalism construes it as “the physical”, but it falls short before our color perception. We are still in search for the right word. Goethe has something to suggest. As I understand him, a clue is found when we silently acknowledge that we find ourselves in the middle of the Ocean of Perception, without knowing where we came there or where we could get out.
