Abstract

Imagine that there is a table in an uninhabited forest and a candle is placed on it. Even when no one is looking at the candle, will its flame still be bright orange? The physical substance of a candle consists of hot gases, which emit photons or waves of electromagnetic energy like many different light sources. These are all electromagnetic waves. The colors that currently exist in candlelight are nothing more than a flow of electromagnetic waves that cannot be seen with our eyes. Therefore, in order for us to experience orange flames, we need a unique human visual system. In order to experience color, humans and objects must be interdependently intertwined, and color is not an independent entity unrelated to the human visual system, but a constitutive experience of perception. So, does color exist objectively? John Locke classified color as a secondary quality, akin to properties such as taste, sound, and pain. While primary properties are physical properties of the object itself, secondary properties are properties that are perceived through our sensory experience. In this sense, color is considered “the ability to construct certain sensations within us.” Locke's traditional concept of color is today classified as color dispositionalism. According to color dispositionalism, color is nothing more than “a disposition that produces a certain kind of experience in the person who perceives the color.” However, color physicalism, contrary to color dispositionalism, argues that color is a primary property of an object, that is, a property of the object itself. According to color physicalism, color is a specific physical state of the surface of an object. Color experiences occur when specific light wavelengths pass through the perceiver's neurophysiological pathways in the optic nerve. This property is called the set of surface spectral reflectance (SSR) of the object's surface. So, is color an intrinsic property of the colored object, or is it simply a phenomenological property that appears to the perceiver when perceivingthe object? In this paper, I will consider how color dispositionalism and color physicalism can be refuted from the perspective of Aristotle's color realism in relation to this question.
