작금의 “자연주의”에 따르면, 선차적으로 물리적 세계가 자리하고 그 안에 지각이 후기적으로 자리한다. 다른 모든 것처럼, 지각은 “자연” 안의 존재자라는 것이다. 그러나 지각의 저 자연주의적 “설명”이 의젓하고 떳떳하고 뜻을 갖춘 역사는 없다. 여기에는 그럴 만한 이유가 있는데, 지각을 설명하기 위해 자연주의가 원용하는 과학적 사실들은, 그 자신, 변형 지각들인 것이다. 우리는 처음부터 지각의 바다 위에서 태어나며 언제라도 저 바다를 떠나지 않는다. 과학의 자리는 저 바다 위에서 건져 올려 진 것의 자리이다. 다른 한편으로, 지각의 “설명”이 의젓하고 떳떳한 뜻을 갖출 역사는 앞으로도 없을 것이다. 왜냐하면 지각은 원초적 소관과 언어의 소관으로 나머지 없이 나누어지지만, 원초적 지각은 어떠한 설명도 필요하지 않는 자연 사실이기 때문이다. 반면 언어적 지각의 경우에는 “자연주의”적 설명이 불가능하다. 도대체 언어는 이미 언어가 아니라면 어떤 무엇으로부터도 설명될 수 없는 하나의 자기-해석이기 때문이다. 더 높은 것은 허락되지도 않고, 더 이상의 것도 그 뒤에서 찾을 수 없는 것이 있으며, 우리는 그것을 근원 현상이라 부른다. 우리가 지각한다는 것은 바로 그러한 근원 현상이다. 우리는 지각의 바다 위에서 태어난다. 그리고 저 출생 이전의 역사는 알 수도 알 필요도 없다. 이 조용한 일종의 체념을 우리는 “자연스러운 자연주의”라 부를 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
According to the present-day “naturalism,” the physical world comes first and perception comes second. Just like all other things, perception is in the physical world. The so-called “naturalism” is standing everything on its head, however. First, the so-called physicalist explanation of perception, as it stands now, does not make good and decent sense. Second, the scientific data which the physicalist explanation draws on are themselves metamorphosed perceptions. We are surrounded and embraced by the Ocean of perception, powerless to leave it and powerless to enter it more deeply. The locus of science is that of the one which we pick up on the sea of perception. Perception is divided into animal perception and linguistic perception. When it comes to primordial animal perception, there is no need whatsoever for explaining it. When it comes to linguistic perception, it is simply impossible to explain. The reason is because language is not accountable to anything but itself. In this way, perception turns out to be an archetypal phenomenon, nothing higher or deeper than which we can imagine. We might call this calm stop “naturalism with human face.”
