A Study on the Role and Development of Foreigner-only Casinos in the Tourism Industry

The purpose of this study is to compare the contribution of foreigner-only casinos with other tourism industries and to present development plans for the casinos. As a result of the analysis, casinos, along with the travel agency and lodging industry, were the three largest tourism industries with the highest sales. It was found that these three industries account for about 70% of the total sales of the Korean tourism industry. Among them, casinos accounted for about 10 to 13% of the total tourism industry sales between 2012 and 2018. As of 2018, the tourism industry with the highest average number of employees was the casino with an average of 431.2 people per workplace. In addition, the casino industry showed the highest contribution to sales per capita, with an average of about 330 million won, which is three times greater than that of the lodging industry and four times that of the travel agency industry. Lastly, foreigner-only casinos were very vulnerable to international issues and incidents despite their great contribution to the national economy. In the future, it seems that tourism policies that can fully reflect these characteristics of foreigner-only casinos should be implemented.
