이 논문은 대상의 본질 개념에 관한 것이다. 분석적 형이상학에서 본질은 양상적 표현으로 이해된다. 파인(Kit Fine)은 본질 개념을 이해하는데 양상적 방법보다는 정의적 방법이 더 적절하다고 주장한다. 이와 다르게 플란팅가(Alvin Plantinga)는 본질 개념을 이해하기 위해서는 필연, 가능과 같은 양상적 표현이 필요하며, 특히 대상의 본질을 파악하기 위해 ‘개체적 본질’이 필요하다고 말한다. 그에 따르면 대상의 본질적 속성과 개체적 본질은 구분되는 것이다. 필자는 파인이 주장하는 정의적 방법이 양상적 표현을 배제하면서 이루어질 수 없음을 지적하고, 나아가 일반적으로 본질적 속성이라고 할 수 있는 기원과 자연종만으로는 대상을 개별화하기에 부족하기 때문에 플란팅가의 개체적 본질 개념을 옹호할 필요가 있음을 보이고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper aims to explore the notion of essence. In the analytic tradition essence can be understood in modal terms. Kit Fine argues against the modal conception: necessary properties are equivalent to essential properties. Alvin Plantinga suggests the distinction between essential properties and individual essences. I argue that Plantinga’s essentialism is better than Fine’s definitional account, and that individual essences as well as essential properties(origins and natural kinds) are needed to individuate an object.
