This paper aims to point out the special problem that is raised in using the notion of possible worlds to understand essences. Furthermore‚ the paper intends to consider the alternatives. Specifically‚ there is the problem of transworld identity‚ that is‚ Leibniz’s Law of the principle of the indiscernibility of identicals is broken among objects in different possible worlds. Therefore David Lewis suggests the counterpart theory. It shows that objects are not identical but similar across possible worlds. I accept that the notion of possible worlds is used to account for essences but reject that objects are transworld identical. In conclusion‚ I argue that we can get much better answer to the question -“What is it?”- by considering individual essences and intrinsicality.
