본 연구는 플라톤의 초기 대화편들에 나타난 여가와 시간보내기의 의미와 철학적 기능에 관한 고찰이다. 우리말로는 대개 ‘여가’와 ‘시간보내기(소일하기)’ 등으로 번역되곤 하는 스콜레(scholē)와 디아트리베(diatribē)는 인간을 동물과 구별해주는 특징인 동시에 인간을 신에 가깝도록 만들어주는 조건으로 간주되어 왔다. 플라톤의 몇몇 대화편들에서 여가와 시간보내기가 철학함의 조건이자 자유인의 조건이라고 주장한다. 특히 이 개념들은 플라톤의 초기 대화편들에 빈번히 등장하며, 이른바 ‘소크라테스적 엘렝코스’의 전개 양상에 적잖은 영향을 끼치는 것처럼 보이는데, 이를 통해서 우리는 플라톤이 일정한 철학적 의도를 가지고서 이 개념들을 사용한 게 아닐까 추측해볼 수 있다. 이 글에서는 여가의 철학적 의미를 살펴보고, 이 개념들이 플라톤의 초기 대화편들에 사용됨으로써 어떤 철학적 효과를 산출하는지를 살펴볼 것이다.
Abstract
This study is focused on the meaning and the philosophical significance of ‘leisure’ (scholē) and ‘amusement’ (diatribē) in Plato’s early dialogues. Leisure and amusement are essential characteristics which distinguish human beings from other animals, as well as properties which enable human to reach divinity. Plato considers leisure and amusement as the conditions of philosophizing and of freedom. It is significant that ‘leisure’ and ‘amusement’ appear frequently in Plato’s early dialogues, and that these terms seem to exercise a strong influence on Socratic elenchus. It allows us to suppose that, Plato had a philosophical intention for using these terms in Socratic dialogue. This paper will try to find not only the philosophical meaning of leisure and amusement, but also their philosophical effect in Plato’s early dialogues.
