Abstract
Establishing his own philosophical ideas, Plato uses Socrates as a main character to lead various types of discussion on many philosophical, particularly ethical and epistemological, issues with his interlocutors in a form of dialogue. Socrates is illustrated to repeatedly professes his own knowledge of ignorance, only practicing a cross-examination in order to test (elenchein) the interlocutors, namely the elenchus (elenchos). As a result of his practice of the elenchus, if the interlocutors turn out to be knowing nothing while having believed to know something, Socrates attempts to show their ignorance and psychological preference. This paper aims to shed light upon the role of the elenchus as a necessary stage in the model of education in Plato’s philosophy, by analysing it on the grounds of the three conditions of the intellectualist principle: knowledge of object (for and of the practice), knowledge of the benefit from acquisition of the object, and knowledge of the method of acquisition of the object. This analysis shall show that the elenchus is a certain art to be practiced on the basis of knowledge of ignorance for the purpose of the common good for all, by which any chance of mal-education is securely prevented (an indirect merit of the elenchus as a stage in the model of education) and the selection of the naturally suitable candidates for the education in dialectic is made for the construction of Plato’s ideal society (a direct merit). In this regard, Socrates’ elenchus is surely believed to take a significant and necessary role of educational model in Plato’s project to establish whole philosophical system, rather than being considered a mere early method that is utilised in the early and middle works (as a portrait of, or in memory of, historical Socrates) but in the end abandoned in the later works (for the expression of Plato’s own philosophical ideas).
