퓌론은 몇 세기 후대의 퓌론주의들로부터 회의주의의 시조로 받아들여진 인물이다. 하지만 퓌론의 철학적 견해와 관련해서 많은 의문이 제기되고 있으며, 오늘날 일부 주석가들은 퓌론이 회의주의자가 아니라 오히려 독단주의 철학자였다고까지 주장한다. 본 논문은 아리스토클레스와 섹스토스 등에 의해 보존되고 있는 퓌론의 제자 티몬의 단편들과 디오게네스 라에르티오스가 전하는 퓌론의 다양한 일화들을 토대로 실제 퓌론의 철학적 견해 및 퓌론과 티몬의 관계에 대해 밝히고자 한다. 이를 통해 우리는 다음과 같은 결론에 도달하게 된다. 첫째, 일부 현대 학자들의 주장과는 달리 퓌론은 독단적 사상가라고 단정지을 수 없으며 퓌론의 말과 행동에는 독단주의적 요소와 회의주의적 요소가 공존하고 있다. 둘째, 퓌론이 회의주의자였는지는 분명치 않으나, 적어도 티몬과 아이네시데모스는 퓌론을 회의주의적 인물로 기술하고자 했다. 셋째, 특히 티몬은 퓌론에 관한 수많은 운문과 산문들을 통해 자신을 퓌론 자신의 또 다른 자아로 제시하고 있으며, 퓌론의 말을 통해 티몬 자신의 이야기를 전하고 있다. 넷째, 티몬은 의도적으로 애매하고 불명료하게 퓌론의 이야기를 전함으로써, 궁극적으로 퓌론에 대한 서로 상반된 진술과 해석들의 힘의 균형을 통해 퓌론을 회의주의적 판단유보의 화신으로 제시하고자 했다.
Abstract
Pyrrho was adopted as a philosophical figurehead by pyrrhonists who lived several centuries later. But many questions are raised about his philosophical view. Interestingly, some contemporary scholars contend that Pyrrho was not a sceptic but a dogmatic philosopher. This article tries to show real Pyrrho's philosophical view and his relation to Timon, analyzing various episodes of Pyrrho cited by Diogenes Laertius and fragments of Timon's writings quoted by Aristocles. Finally we get the following conclusions. First, contrary to the contention of some scholars, Pyrrho cannot be regarded as a dogmatic philosopher, in that his words and deeds include not only dogmatical sceptical elements. Second, it is not certain whether Pyrrho was a sceptic. Nevertheless Timon and Aenesidemus try hard to describe Pyrrho as a sceptic. Third, Pyrrho's student Timon presents himself as Pyrrho's "alter ego". And through Pyrrho's words Timon is telling his own stories. Forth, with intentional ambiguous and obscure description of Pyrrho, Timon tries eventually to present Pyrrho as an archetype of the sceptic, on the basis of equipollence of the contrary staments and interpretations.
