초록

아리스토텔레스는 특히 『영혼에 관하여』, 『니코마코스 윤리학』, 『수사학』에서 ‘쾌락’과 ‘고통’을 빈번하게 언급하는데, 이 감정들이 정확히 어떤 정신적 현상들을 가리키는지, 그리고 그의 철학에서 어떤 역할을 하는가를 검토한다. 『영혼에 관하여』와 『수사학』에 대한 논의에서, 우리는 쾌락과 고통이 영혼과 육체로 이루어진 통합체의 운동, 감각 주체의 경험, 대상에 대한 긍정과 부정, 비율의 적절함과 과도함, 자연적 상태와 비자연적 상태 등으로 설명하고 있다는 사실을 알게 될 것이다. 그리고 우리는 아리스토텔레스가 『니코마코스 윤리학』에서 이성적 쾌락과 비이성적 쾌락을 신적 요소의 유무를 통해 구분하고 있으며, 특히 이성적 쾌락과 고통은 정상적인 지적 능력을 갖춘 성인에게만 가능한 것으로 보고 있다는 결론에 도달하게 될 것이다.

Abstract

Aristotle frequently talks of such concepts as pleasure and pain, in particular in his De Anima, Nicomachean Ethics, and Rhetorics. This paper examines what kinds of mental phenomena such emotions refer to and what kinds of roles they play in his philosophy. From an examination of the De Anima and the Rhetoric, we come to know that pleasure and pain are explained in terms of movements of the unity of soul and body, of the sense-experience of the agency, of affirmation or denial concerning objects, of the adequacy or excess of ratio, and of the natural state and non-natural state. Moreover, from an examination of the Nicomachean Ethics, we shall conclude that Aristotle distinguishes rational pleasure and irrational pleasure in terms of the possession of the divine element in men, and that he thinks that rational pleasure and pain are possible only for adults who have a normal intellectual capacity.
