Abstract
In this article, using Kant’s insight I attempted to get an answer to a question that has been overlooked and not sufficiently discussed in posthumanism discourses. In the 21st century, there have been many voices predicting the emergence of posthumans. Among them, Yuval Harari wrote in Homo Deus that humanity will advance to achieve immortality, happiness, and divinity, and that these three goals will be integrated into one ultimate goal, ‘Homo Deus’. However, no specific answer was given as to why humanity had no choice but to take that direction. In this paper, based on the similarities between Harari’s diagnosis of what people pursue and the themes that Kant criticized in the Kritik der reinen Vernunft, I closely examined Kant’s critical analysis of the ideas of pure reason, especially the transcendental Ideal (=God). According to Kant, reason, the highest human faculty, has a unique principle and aims for the highest unity and perfect systematicity of all knowledge, so that reason pursues the unconditioned in order to complete the conditional series of knowledge, which is expressed in three ideas: soul, world, and God. Most of all, reason must pursue the transcendental Ideal for the thorough determination (omnimoda determinatio) of each thing. Being the Urbegriff for the possibility of all things, it is omnitudo realitatis and ens realissimum, which is nothing other than God. Once the idea is realized, substantiated and personified, man – as long as he has reason – has no choice but to aim towards God. Therefore, humans with reason can think of God and must aim for God as the transcendental Ideal. As humans realized that reason was theirs, not someone else’s, they can also have the dream of being Homo Deus.
