Abstract
In this paper, we seek the meaning of moral hope, which has been almost entirely overlooked in existing research on Kant’s philosophy in Korea. To this end, this paper mainly attempts to analyze how the meaning of hope presented in Kritik der reinen Vernunft and Kritik der praktischen Vernunft can be revealed. The reason is that, firstly, the meaning of hope is always presented in relation to the theory of the highest good. And secondly, when we notice to “Der Kanon der reinen Vernunft” (in Kritik der reinen Vernunft) and “Dialektik der re- inen praktischen Vernunft” (in Kritik der praktischen Vernunft) in which the theory of the highest good is presented in the most origi- nal form, we can find the meaning of hope which presented its most origianl form. To this end, we will rigorously analyze the contexts in the “Der Kanon der reinen Vernunft” chapter, in which “What may I hope?” question appears. Furthermore, we will look at how the concept of hope materializes and expands its meaning along with the theory of the highest good in “Dialektik der reinen praktischen Vernunft.” Through this work, we aim to reveal how the meaning of Kantian hope, which has been almost entirely overlooked in existing research on the high- est good, is revealed in the theory of the highest good, thereby re- vealing that Kant’s philosophy can ultimately be understood as a phi- losophy of hope.
