아프락시아 논쟁에 대한 아카데미 학파의 카르네아데스의 방어 논증과 논증 전략-pithanon 개념을 중심으로 한 행위 가능성 탐구와 연관하여

초록

신아카데미 학파를 이끌었던 카르네아데스는 아프락시아 논쟁에서 독보적인 위치를 차지했다. 그는 독단주의자들의 공격에 맞서 ‘약한 동의(assent) 개념에 근거한 온건한 방어 전략’ 하에서 pithanon에 근거한 방어 논증을 구성했다. 이는 ‘일체의 동의를 배제한 급진적인 전략’ 하에서 eulogon에 근거한 방어 논증을 펼쳤던 중기 아카데미 학파의 아르케실라오스와 차별화된 것이었다. 또한 그것은 아르케실라오스와 동일한 전략 하에서 phainomenon에 근거한 방어 논증을 펼쳤던 피론주의자 섹스투스 엠피리쿠스와도 차별화된 것이었다. 아르케실라오스는 스토아주의자들의 동의 개념 자체를 거부하면서 ‘인상과 충동’만으로 이루어진 동물적 행위 모델을 제시했지만, 카르네아데스는 ‘승인’과 같은 ‘약한 동의 개념’에 근거해 행위의 문제를 풀고자 하는 새로운 시도를 했다. 즉 그는 일의적 개념으로 이해되었던 동의 개념을 두 가지 차원으로 분리하고, 그 가운데에서 약한 의미의 동의 개념인 ‘승인(approval)’ 개념에 주목해 아프락시아 문제에 대한 새로운 대안으로 pithanon 개념을 제시했던 것이다. 또한 그는 아르케실라오스와 동일한 전략 하에서 동의 개념 자체를 거부함으로써 아프락시아 문제를 풀고자 했던 섹스투스와 달리, ‘개연적이고 두루 검토되었으며 의심의 여지가 없는 감각표상’을 제시함으로써 인간 행복의 근거를 확보했다. 결론적으로, 카르네아데스는 개연적 진리를 옹호했고 온건한 회의주의를 지향했다. 온건한 회의주의에 기반해서, 그는 모든 대상에 대한 선·악 판단을 단정적으로 주장하는 독단주의자들의 삶보다 선·악 판단을 유보하는 회의주의자들의 삶의 방식이 더 유의미하다는 것을 입증했다. 그의 이러한 탐구로 인해 고대 회의주의는 양적으로 성장하고 질적으로 발전했다.

Abstract

Carneades, who was the founder of the New Academy, occupied a unique position in the Apraxia issues. He constructed a defensive arguments based on pithanon, under ‘a moderate defensive strategy based on the concept of weak assertion(addsensio)’ against dogmatist attacks. This was different from Arcesilaus, the leader of the Middle Academy, who developed a defensive arguments based on eulogon under ‘a radical strategy that excluded all assertion’. It was also different from the Pyrrhonist Sextus Empiricus, who developed a defensive arguments based on phainomenon under the same strategy as Arcesilaus. Arcesilaus rejected the Stoic concept of assent itself and presented an animal model of behavior consisting only of ‘impressions and impulses.’ However, Carneades made a new attempt to solve the problem of action based on ‘weak concept of assertion’ such as ‘approval(approbatio)’. In other words, he separated the concept of assent, which was understood as a univocal concept, into two dimensions, focused on the concept of ‘approval’, which was a weak concept of assent, and presented the concept of pithanon as a new alternative to the problem of apraxia. Also, unlike Sextus, who tried to solve the problem of Apraxia by rejecting the concept of assent under the same strategy as Arcesilaus, he presented the concept of pithanon, ‘a plausible and uncontroverted and tested impression.’ As a result, he was able to secure the foundation for human happiness. In conclusion, Carneades defended the probability of truth and pursued moderate skepticism. Based on moderate skepticism, he argued that the way of life of skeptics who suspend judgment of good and evil for all objects is more meaningful than the way of life of dogmatists who dogmatically insist on judging good and evil for all objects. Because of his exploration, ancient skepticism grew quantitatively and developed qualitatively.
