Abstract
As Arcesilaus developed his unique philosophy of skepticism, the Stoics strongly criticized Arcesilaus, citing the Apraxia problem, or the problem of the impossibility of action. Accordingly, Arcesilaus constructed his own defense argument by criticizing the Stoics' concepts of assent and kataleptic impression. At this time, the principle he presupposed was the suspension of judgment, and the new concept he proposed was ‘to eulogon’. Arcesilaus's response to the Apraxia problem was twofold: The first answer was that human actions are made up of impressions and impulses, and that they are like instinctive actions. In particular, he excluded the concept of consent, which the Stoics cherished, from the theory of action. Accordingly, the Stoics criticized Arcesilaus's theory of behavior on the grounds that it did not contain the unique meaning of human behavior which differentiates it from animal behavior. The second answer was that human actions are carried out by to eulogon, which makes a happy life for humans possible.. In particular, to eulogon was shown to be a device that can rationally explain human behavior, as well as a new device that allowed skeptics to fuse skeptical principles and skeptical behavior. Through these two answers, Arcesilaus was able to defend his skepticism from the persistent attacks of the Stoics without damaging the first principle of skepticism, the epoche.
