본고는 칸트의 『판단력비판』에서 제시되는 “미적 공통감”(sensus communis aestheticus) 개념과 그것에 담긴 인간학적 함의를 칸트 철학의 내재적 관점에서 검토하려는 시도이다. 주지하듯이 미적 공통감은 칸트의 미학 체계에서 취미판단의 주관적 보편성이나 필연성을 위한 근거를 마련하는 데 핵심 개념으로 사용된다. 그런데 칸트는 이 개념을 단지 위와 같은 주제들뿐 아니라, 계몽주의와 역사철학에 관한 여러 맥락에까지 복합적으로 연결한다. 그리하여 이 개념은 단순히 칸트 자신의 취미판단 이론을 내재적으로 정당화하는 차원을 넘어서서 인간에 관한 더 넓은 전망으로 나아간다. 본고의 주안점은 바로 여기에 있다. 이하에서 본고는 우선 『판단력비판』 이전의 칸트의 일반적인 공통감 용법을 간략하게 검토한다(2). 그리고 그것과 사뭇 다른 성격을 지니는 미적 공통감 용법을 특히 취미판단의 주관적 보편성 문제와의 연관 속에서 살펴본다(3). 이후로는 미적 공통감에 결부되어 있는 미학 외적 맥락을 검토하여 이 개념에서 암시되는 그의 계몽주의적 인간관을 조명한다(4).
Abstract
This paper is an attempt to examine the concept of “aesthetic common sense”(sensus communis aestheticus) presented by Kant in Critique of the Power of Judgment and its anthropological implications from an intrinsic viewpoint of Kantian philosophy. As is generally known, aesthetic common sense is a core concept in Kant’s aesthetic system which provides the basis for the subjective universality and the necessity of the judgments of Taste. However, Kant complexly links this concept not only to the above themes but also to various contexts related to the Enlightenment and philosophy of history. Thus, this concept goes beyond the justification of his theory of judgments of taste and advances to broader perspectives on the human being. The focus of this paper is here. In the following, I will briefly examine Kant’s general uses of common sense before Critique of the Power of Judgment(2). And I will inquire into the aesthetic common sense, which has very different characteristics from theirs, particularly concerning the subjective universality of the judgments of taste(3). After that, I will examine the extra-aesthetic contexts linked to the aesthetic common sense and illuminate Kant’s Enlightenment view of the human being implied by this concept(4).
