Abstract
This article attempts to reveal communication-theoretic aspects of Kant’s philosophy by illuminating his trust in the idea of “universal human understanding” (allgemeiner Menschenverstand) that is demonstrated throughout his thoughts on Enlightenment, and his concept of the “impossibility of total error” (Unmöglichkeit des totalen Irrtums) which is developed in his logic. Through these tasks, the article seeks to explore the potentiality of the expansion of Kant’s philosophy and also reflects on what constitutes a desirable and proper attitude in communication. To this end, the article proceeds as follows: First, it considers Kant’s idea of universal human understanding as one of the presuppositions contributing to his communication theory, summarizing it concerning his thoughts on Enlightenment (2). This idea, which proclaims that everyone is a possessor of common sense and a partner who participates in common human reason, serves as a crucial reference point for recognizing the status of interlocutors differently. The article then treats the concept of the impossibility of total error as an other presupposition of Kant’s communication theory, analyzing related content extracted from his Logic, Lectures on Logic, and Reflections (3). This concept, which emphasizes that, insofar as the interlocutor is a possessor of universal human understanding, their claims or judgments cannot be entirely wrong, suggests that we should strive to find some truth even in seemingly erroneous claims. Finally, the article synthesizes these findings to explore how they can relate to the realm of communication, thereby revealing the communication-theoretic aspects inherent in Kant’s philosophy (4). Namely, the article clarifies what communicative rules Kant’s two concepts provide and what attitudes we should adopt toward interlocutors and so on.
