국내에서 효, 효행 논의는 공맹의 효론을 대전제로 전개되고 있다. 해외에서 최근 활발하게 논의되고 있는 효행론 역시 공맹의 효론이 연구의 기점(基點), 起點)이다. 이는 국내외에서 모두 공맹의 사상을 중심으로 효, 효행을 논의하고 있다는 것을 방증한다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 ‘일반화된 편견’을 홍일식의 효 담론을 중심으로 재고해 보려는 데 목표가 있으며, 제2장에서는 국내의 기존 효론이 갖는 문제점을 지적하고 홍일식의 효 담론을 통해 어떻게 공맹의 그늘에서 벗어날 수 있는지를 타진해 볼 계획이다. 제3장에서는 영어권에서 활동 중인 중국계 학자들의 효행론이 노정한 문제점, 대표적으로 세속화된 효론(secularized patriotism, Chinese nationalism), 다시 말해 다분히 정치적으로 이데올로기화된 효행론을 비판하면서 동서양을 가로지르는 신인본주의(New humanism)로서 효 개념을 새로게 정립해 보고자 한다. 그리고 제4장 결론에서는 홍일식의 효 담론에 근거해 왜 그리고 어떻게 우리의 문화원형이자 전통문화인 ‘한국의 효’를 지키고 발전시켜야 하는지를 제안하면서 결론을 짓고자 한다.
Abstract
In Korea, discussions on filial piety and filial behavior have been developed based on Confucius and Mencius's theory of filial piety. The theory of filial piety that has been actively discussed overseas recently also has Confucius and Mencius's theory of filial piety as its starting point. This shows that discussions on filial piety and filial behavior are centered on the ideas of Confucius and Mencius both at home and abroad. This study aims to reconsider the "generalized prejudice" towards Hong Il-Sik’s discourse on filial piety. In Chapter 2, I will highlight the problems in the existing theories of filial piety in Korea and explore how we can escape from the shadow of Confucius and Mencius through Hong Il-Sik’s discourse on filial piety. In Chapter 3, I will criticize the problems in the theories of filial piety put forth by Chinese scholars active in the English-speaking world; most notably secularized patriotism (Chinese nationalism), or in other words, theories of filial piety that are largely politically ideologized. I will then attempt to reestablish the concept of filial piety as a Neo-humanism that transcends the East and the West. In Chapter 4, I will conclude by proposing why and how we should preserve and develop "Korean filial piety", which is a Korean cultural archetype and traditional culture, based on Hong Il-Sik’s discourse on filial piety.
