Abstract
Today, the discourse on filial piety, both domestically and internationally, seems to be more focused on the practice of filial piety than on clarifying its philosophical meaning. However, when the focus shifts to the issue of filial piety’s practice the scope of filial piety’s application is reduced to a mere issue of parent-child relationships. In this process, the traditional values that filial piety originally had (such as communal values, reverence for heaven, etc.) are relegated to the level of an outdated and old-fashioned ideology and become targets of criticism. Accordingly, this study aims to introduce the discourse on filial piety of Hong Il-Sik, who devoted his entire life to studying “Korean filial piety” and attempted to transform the 21st century into an era of humanistic and people-centered spiritual revolution through filial piety. Hong Il-Sik’s discourse on filial piety presents the following new claims that are difficult to find in existing domestic studies: i) The original country of filial piety is not Confucius’s China, but Korea. ii) The true meaning of filial piety is not children unilaterally serving and sacrificing for their parents, but rather mutual exchange between parents and children, and its essence lies in reciprocity. iii) “Korean filial piety” is not limited to a culture of utensils or a culture of norms, but is a kind of culture of ideas, which has aimed to “create a common culture of humanity that is the highest and best.” iv) When citizens of the global village ‘become one family through love’ by practicing such values of filial piety, the global village will no longer suffer from conflict, discord, war, and other pains, but will share a new “cultural territory” filled with consideration for others, respect, and peace. In this way, Hong Il-Sik's discourse on filial piety contains a message of salvation for the global village, that is, for a We(human)-community. In that sense, his discourse on filial piety is worthy of being evaluated as a global (universal) practical ethic that transcends the local geographical boundaries of “Korea”, which is the final conclusion of this study.
