이 글은 아리스토텔레스의 『정치학』에 나타난 시민의 본성으로서 자유에 대한 논의에서 시작한다. 아리스토텔레스는 본성적으로 자유민인 시민과 본성적으로 종속적인 노예를 구분하면서, 정치적 행위자로서의 시민을 규정한다. 이것은 정치적 행위를 위해 경제적 안정이 전제되어야 함을 의미한다. 정치와 경제의 분리를 논할 수 있었던 과거와는 달리, 현대 사회의 중요한 정치적 과제는 대부분 경제적 영역과 연관되어 있다. 이처럼 공적 논의가 사적 관심인 경제적 문제에 집중하는 것을 아렌트는 사회적인 것의 등장으로 보았으며, 이 때문에 정치의 본래적 의미가 상실되었다고 본다. 하지만 경제적 문제를 배제할 수 없는 현대 사회에서는 오히려 경제적 영역이 공론의 중심이 되는 사회적인 것을 수용함으로써 적절한 정치 개념을 재구축할 필요가 있다. 이에 대해 빈곤과 비정치적 상황에 처해 있는 여성을 분석함으로써 정치적 행위에서 사회적인 것의 수용이 가능한지에 대해 찾아보고자 한다. 더불어 시민이 갖추어야 할 자발적 저항의 논리를 다룸으로써, 정치적 존재인 시민이 주체적 행위자로서 이 사회에서 어떤 태도를 가져야 할 것인지를 생각하고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper examines the notion of the freedom and democracy in Human Nature as Citizenship and Slavery in Aristotle Politics. My starting point will be Aristotle's definition of citizenship which is concerned on public affairs that the economies of the Greek city-states rested on slavery, and without slaves (and women) to do the productive labor, there could be no leisure for men to engage in more intellectual lifestyles. Hannah Arendt, however, explores the ambiguities of democracy that the political action is based on the economic stability. Arendt insists that modern societies enter the stage when the political action is reduced to private economic action, and that cause the serious problems in political life. In this paper, I will reconstruct the proper conception of the politics including the social and the political with private economic action. I will also discuss the female group in poverty and in non-political situation as the crucial example to solve “an acceptance of the social in the political action”. Thus we will deliberate the citizen's attitude as the spontaneous resistance that plays role as the subject of the political action in a stable society.
